The Big Cleanup

We, Frenchies, were not too happy when The Weather Channel announced that a major snowstorm was headed our way.  We were very concerned when they said that it could cause widespread damage to trees and bushes and that power lines could come down.  They really hit the nail on the head this time, but unfortunately, there was very little anyone could do to prepare for this terrible storm.

Francesca, I feel so badly about how much damage occurred to so many beautiful trees at the farm. Let's drive around in the Kawasaki and have a look. 1 Francesca, I feel so badly about how much damage occurred to so many beautiful trees at the farm. Thoughts on French Bulldogs

So ugly they are cute!! Cant begin to tell you how many times I have heard that since getting our French Bulldog, named Indica. And its true, looks like a pig, snorts like one too! Once when walking her outside I had a little girls point and say to her daddy "look, a piggy on a leash". Tho which the father replied "no silly, that's a...uh... dog...I think".

Suffice to say it has been very rewarding experience in owning a French Bulldog, but do understand that they are a bit of a special breed.

* She snores louder then me!! Ask my wife, that is no small feat.

* She farts stinkier then me. Thankfully not louder so I can always blame her.

* When she eats it sounds like someone is vacuuming up wet noodles

* When she throws up (quite often) it sounds like grandfather clearing his throat.

* Allergies, allergies, allergies...scratching, scratching, scratching! Pet food allergies, grass allergies, air allergies, etc...

* Doesn't listen to commands. Understands perfectly well, just doesn't listen. A real tete de bois!

but....

What a lovable, hysterical, sweet, ridiculous, comical, amusing, peculiar, special kind of breed.

She is great with our 1 year old baby. She love everybody and everything. Cant imagine having anything else.

But understand before you consider getting one there are a few things to be aware of:

Cost - in getting them and dealing with the inevitable medical bills. Normally we are very big rescue and adopt type of family, but this type of dog has been overbread in some places which can increase medical issues. It is my opinion that if you do want one, you find a reputable breeder. The one we sued also fosters rescued mutts so it made us feel a little less guilty about 'buying' a dog.

Not a guard dog - unless the person can be licked to death.

Not a sports dog - due to how their faces and noses are formed, they don't breath well (hence the snoring and other noises). A lot of attention needs to be paid when exercising the dog especially in hot weather. It can kill them very quickly.

I hope this article has given you a better understanding of what it is like to own a french bulldog. Don't forget, rescued dogs can be just and fun. And no matter what please spay or neuter your dog and/or cat. Specifically regarding French Bulldogs, giving birth can kill the mother and the puppies. That why mostly all French Bulldog births are c-section, which is still a risk for the mother.

Happy petting!!!

French Bulldog Puppies and Their Allergies

It may be surprising but many dogs suffer from allergies, both environmental and food, and French Bulldogs can react very easily. You may not know how to recognize the symptoms when you don't know what they are.

Smaller dogs and light-haired dogs are more susceptible to allergies than others, such as French Bulldog puppies with their light colored fur and small stature. Some think the small breed of a French Bulldog are more susceptible to allergies because they are closer to the ground and irritants such as grass and pollen. Their short, fine fur also allows for easy access to the skin to cause more irritation. Whatever the reason, allergies for your French Bulldog puppy are just as miserable for him as allergies are for you.

French Bulldogs puppies with environmental allergies, also called canine atopic dermatitis, are known to rub their face on carpeting or furniture, scratch at their ears and eyes more than normal and chew their feet, legs and pads. If your Frenchie is doing this, it may be because the irritants are on his skin causing itching and scratching nonstop. Try wiping his feet and face off with a damp cloth after each potty break outside. This will help to remove some of the irritants plaguing your pup. And the cold water will provide some relief to your pup's skin.

Recurrent ear infections are also a big sign of allergies. It is best to talk to your veterinarian to determine if this is caused by allergies or a more serious ear condition. Depending on the diagnosis, your vet may recommend an ear rinse that can be bought at any pet store. This will help to wash out any allergens that may be lingering in the ear canal as well as washing away any dirt. Your French Bulldog puppy can be especially prone to ear infections because of the large size of his ears. The ears could be trapping in irritants, pollens and other allergens in the air to wreak havoc in the ear canal.

Now that you know the symptoms, your puppy scratching all of the furniture and chewing his feet may not be such a big mystery. Now it's time to take action against the allergens!

French Bulldog Puppies

With the advent of modernization and liberalization, people find themselves in a mess and they do not have a proper companion to play with in their free time. Most of the people prefer to go with French bulldog puppies. These pups are real cute and are also termed as highly social beings because they have this peculiar tendency to mix with people and the atmosphere around them. This is the reason that is making them the first choice while shopping for a pet. These French bulldog puppies are so popular, as they are highly social, cute looking, playful and also easy to take care of, i.e. they have all the qualities that a perfect pet has to have. These pups have got a peculiar look, which makes them different from other pups and moreover they have more features than any other pup.

French bulldog puppies are thus the best choice one can make if they want to have a pet and a good companion because they are not only good looking, but also are very loyal to their masters. But, buying the pup should be followed by taking care of them, and French pups are the most flexible to take care of. One should give their pup a vaccination and all the required things that can prevent medical hazards and conditions. French bulldog puppies are easy to take care of and spend time with, like for instance, one can go on a walk with them and also play with them.

Pros and Cons of Owning a French Bulldog

French bulldogs are increasingly becoming popular among celebrities as well as in the common population. Before you rush in getting yourself one of these Frenchies, what are some of the things you need to know about these breed? What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a French bulldog?

Pros

- These dogs are small and curious dogs making them ideal as house pets. They also adapt well to changes.

- They are affectionate and lovable dogs that are loyal to their owners and will never miss an opportunity to charm those around them.

- They are intelligent and easy to train. Their curiosity makes them open to new things and thus they are able to learn relatively fast.

- They get along well with other animals, some may show aggressive behavior but this can easily be handled through proper training.

- They do not require a lot of exercise, a short walk in the evening will do.

- They are low maintenance because of their short-haired coat which only requires brushing every once in a while to keep it in good condition.

Cons

- They are expensive to maintain. Frenchies are expensive to buy especially if you want one that is from a good line. That aside there is also food, and medical expenses.

- They suffer from some medical conditions which is why you should purchase Frenchies from a good bloodline. These medical conditions will usually cost owners a lot to manage or treat.

- They are prone to many types of allergies, this means that owners need to be very observant in case of any symptoms.

- They can be stubborn at times and refuse to comply with commands. This makes it difficult to train some Frenchies.

- Because of their structure Frenchies will commonly snore while sleeping and at times when awake in addition they may also drool a lot. Some people can't stand this sound and many owners have given up their Frenchies because of these.

- While Frenchies do not show as many behavior problems as their counterparts the English bulldogs, they also love to chew and may be very destructive. This behavior can easily be controlled with proper training. Some Frenchies also tend to be aggressive towards other dogs and strangers which is undesirable.

It is important that you carefully weigh your options before you consider purchasing a bulldog. Some of these problems can be avoided if you buy from the right place, that is, find a good breeder who has experience in breeding Frenchies.

You should preferably get your Frenchie as a puppy and train him yourself in order to get the kind of results you expect. There are many rescue organizations with Frenchies that have been abandoned by their former owners. If you are up to the challenge and do not mind some of the problems such Frenchies are likely to have, you can adopt one.

It is your choice to make on whether the pros have it or the cons have convinced you otherwise.

Proper Exercise Regimen for the French Bulldog

French bulldogs are not the most active dogs in the planet. In fact on a scale of 1 to 10 one 10 being most active and one being list active, your Frenchie ranks one with no regrets. Frenchies are content to just lie down and do nothing. This is one of the reasons why Frenchies are susceptible to obesity.

Designing a good exercise regimen for your French bulldog is necessary to keep your Frenchie fit and healthy. The physical character of French bulldogs makes them intolerant to most exercises and very susceptible to heat. Thus exercises for French bulldogs should be mild and not be physically exerting on the Frenchies.

The best time to exercise these dogs is early in the morning and later at night when it is cool. This will minimize the risk of the dog succumbing to heat. Exercise should not be done for long periods of time, these dogs only require mild exercise. This means that exercise session be only for a short while.

This dog has hard time breathing because of its compromised air passages. Therefore, any exercise that will increase the demand for oxygen should not be overdone since this dog will have a hard time getting enough air to meet the demand. Watch the Frenchie during exercise, any signs of exhaustion will act as a cue to stop the exercise.

A form of exercise that is well tolerated by this breed is walking. The walking should not be for long distances and should be done when it is cool outside In order to keep the Frenchie comfortable, walk at a reasonable pace. Never try to entice the dog to chase after you, this is dangerous since the air passages may become occluded resulting in sufficient supply of oxygen. This will cause the dog to collapse and may lead to other complex conditions.

Never ever leave a French dog unattained near a pool of water. These dogs are not good swimmers and will have hard time staying afloat in water. If you want a dog that you can teach how to swim, then this is not the breed for you.

While exercise is important, it should not be too serious an affair such that the bulldog is anxious and reluctant to go. Make exercise fun for your dog by including some fun activities. You can use this time to teach the dog a new trick such as 'play dead.' You may also hide things on the path you use for walking and let your bulldog find them. These activities will be a lot of fun for you and the dog and their accomplishment will give the dog a boost of confidence and stimulate him mentally.

French dogs are intelligent dogs that will appreciate a good challenge every once in a while. Meal time should not come before exercise. When the dog is full, he will be more reluctant to go out and exercise and may prefer to play or take a nap.

Always have the dog on a leash when taking him out for exercise.

On the origins of the Frenchie

One of the main ancestors of the French Bulldog is English. After the industrial revolution, many workers lost their jobs and many of them settled in France. Normally, they took their dogs with them - it is how many toys Bulldogs received in France where they were crossed with other breeds - and the French Bulldog was finally created.

A French Bulldog is a good choice for me?

If you want to be the proud owner of an very affectionate, lively and playful dog that nourishes human buddy, then French Bulldog is the race just for you. This race not just like adults, but she also loves children aged, thoughtful (young, but they tolerate rough game) and other dogs and pets if they are together.

The French Bulldog coat is short and smooth that do not require too much grooming - weekly brushing is sufficient. These dogs have a tendency to drool, therefore special attention must be paid to the folds of the skin - for example on the snout - and must be cleaned often to prevent diseases. Apart from that, the French Bulldog is a race relatively healthy.

These training dogs is not too hard, but they require consistency and patience of trainer to keep them happy and keep their attention.

All in all this dog is advisable for the families who will be able to provide this dog enough love and activity, but also a place in their apartment, as this dog prefers the life of the apartment.

I hope that this article will be useful for you, is you help decide if this is the best race for you.

Puppy stores: When Affection Alone insufficient to care for your puppy

While pet owners can spend lots of money on food, medicine and supplies required for their furry friends each year, the U.S. pet industry generates not an annual $ 12 billion on only essentials. Lovers of dogs across the country make an art of providing their expensive pooches accessories and services, and no group is more richly spoiled than most of the cute: puppies.

In fact, puppies have become such a popular receiver end for expensive gifts that all marks have been developed specially for young dogs and formed a new type of boutique doggie creation - the - puppy. Chock full of everything from designer clothing and jewelry of bowls blinged-out doggie, puppy shop evokes an image of tiny French lapdogs in the arms of the nobility in Versailles: an era (for better or for worse) when prevailing comfort and luxury.

The range of products transported by a puppy boutique can vary of reasonable and classy to the truly outrageous. A shop of puppies, Olivetini Designs, carries a range of clothing consisting of tutus developed and Leopard - print corsets, while the other, the Posh Puppy store, carries a bowl of Monogram designed by Christian Aidigier, the designer of the now-famous line of clothing Ed Hardy. Halloween costumes, expensive vintage pet carriers and sumptuous beds for pets which resemble antique furniture are some of the products owners may lavish on their new kids. The more exorbitant merchandise available for purchase in a shop of puppy is perhaps doggie jewelry. Sparkling and opulent, these items can range from Crystal and enamel of the ID, sold by the puppy store tags pampered pups for dog collar the young Cherie inlaid Diamond by jewelry Collection, including a whopping $ 378 000 patrons costs.

If you it accede or not, the connection between luxury and affection has existed since time immemorial. Applied by aristocrats of history to the advantaged children and lovers of project, such as providing gifts extends to dogs and their young thus, and as long as it does, the puppy store and its merchandise will have a place in the pet industry.

Help Bring Mi Sun to Canada

I am once more reaching out for help with rescue.

I was just sent video of a little pied French Bulldog girl in a group run at KAPS. The private rescue group there that fosters has NO foster homes available for a Frenchie, and she is in a kill shelter. We estimate she has until month end, before she faces death.

If we can raise the money to get her to Canada or the USA, we WILL find her a foster home, either through French Bulldog Last Chance Rescue or through Eastern Canada French Bulldog Club and Rescue.

Will you help us, again?

I’ve named her Mi Sun, which means “Beauty and Goodness”, because every rescue dog we help reaffirms my faith in the goodness of people, and the beauty in the eyes of each of these dogs.

Here is her video – look for her at 0:02

Further Steps to Becoming a Champion

You may recall last week when Karen Tracy and Jan Kolnik came to the farm to begin my training for an upcoming dog show in Leesburg, Virginia.  My father, Maddox, who is owned by Karen, is a seasoned champion, and both she and Jan think that I have excellent potential, as well.  Yesterday, they both returned to the farm to continue my training, but this time, they had a little surprise for me by the name of Trinity.

Hi Karen! It's so nice to see you and Jan again, but I'm especially excited to see my cousin, Trinity! She's very good looking. 1 Hi Karen! It's so nice to see you and Jan again, but I'm especially excited to see my cousin, Trinity! She's very good looking.

Kefir Benefits for Pregnant French Bulldogs

Delilah had an upset stomach last week, so she’s been getting Kefir daily with her food, and she loves it. I’ve now started adding it to everyone’s food, since it is such a rich, healthful and relatively inexpensive way to add nutrition to their diets, and to support immune and digestive function.

Kefir is currently getting a lot of buzz as a so called super food. Similar to yogurt, Kefir is made by fermenting milk (goat, cow, sheep or even coconut) with a bacterial and yeast starter known as ‘kefir grains’.

From an Article on Kefir for Culinary Students -

Yogurt is made by culturing fresh milk (previously boiled and cooled) with a bacteria starter. The starter, usually containing two or three beneficial bacteria, comes from a previously made batch of yogurt. Yogurt must ferment in an environment warmer than normal room temperature (about 110 degrees), for a fairly specific amount of time (about 8 to 16 hours), in order to develop properly. The culture bacteria in yogurt have only a limited lifespan and must be renewed regularly with new culture.

In contrast, kefir is made by culturing fresh milk with live kefir grains. These grains are actually colonies of more than 30 bacteria and yeasts that are bound together in a stable, symbiotic relationship.[2],[3] Kefir ferments at room temperature, and has a wider range of acceptable fermentation periods (from about 12 hours to two days). Kefir grains stay alive and robust indefinitely. They also grow in size and number during the fermentation process. After the milk is fermented, the grains are filtered out and added to new milk for another batch of kefir.

Kefir has some really interesting health claims, some documented, some not. Of prime benefit is the fact that the beneficial bacteria found in Kefir actually colonize the digestive tract,  aiding in digestive function and in fighting harmful bacteria. The culture in yogurt, on the other hand, must continue to be eaten daily to get the benefit of their digestive bacteria and enzymes.

For dog breeders, Kefir’s effects on folic acid production are interesting. Kefir itself is naturally rich in vitamins B1 and B12, and is also a wonderful source of biotin, another B vitamin which has been shown to aid in the absorption and functioning of other B vitamins, including folic acid, and to

‘significantly increase folic acid content’.

- From “Vitamin profiles of kefirs made from milks of different species”

There is speculation that kefir can also aid with milk production, which makes it very useful to have on hand for after bitches deliver, and it has been shown to aid in lactose digestion. Kefirin, an active ingredient in Kefir, has been shown to reduce serum cholesterol.

It has also been shown to suppress an increase in blood pressure, and to be a natural source of tryptophan, an essential amino acid known to have  ’calming effect’ on the nerves (both vital concerns during pregnancy, especially when dealing with small brindle beached whales who are currently fuming with hatred for all of mankind).

I purchase my Kefir from Chicory Common, a local Durham health food store. Their Kefir comes from Pinehedge farms, who have a great page on how Kefir is produced.

Plaid French Bulldogs

Plaid French Bulldogs are the hottest new designer dog breed, renowned the world over to be the MOST expensive dog breed in the world (mostly because the airbrushing costs so damned much money). Available for sale only to the rich, the famous and the incredibly stupid.

FYI, French Bulldogs are genetically unusual among dog breeds,  in that they can appear in almost any color or pattern possible in any breed. This is part of what gives French Bulldogs such a diverse look. There are three colors and/or patterns which are not allowable under AKC and CKC breed standards – black (meaning black without any trace of brindle, liver (generally agreed to be a solid colored brown dog with brown pigment) and black and tan (“Rottweiler” type markings).

Some breeders intentionally breed for these colors, call them “rare” and mark their prices up exorbitantly, to take advantage of the public’s desire for unusual (and stupidly over priced) goods. While there is nothing wrong with ‘rare’ or unusual colored French Bulldogs like Blue or Chocolate, there’s also nothing inherently special about them – they’re just another Frenchie.

Too often, in fact, people who are breeding for ‘rare’ colors don’t care about the basic fundamental things which can help to produce a healthy litter of French Bulldogs. They choose their breeding stock based solely on color, and ignore health, temperament and structure. Because ‘rare’ colors are a recessive, they often do generations of incredibly tight inbreeding, to increase their chances of producing a litter of unusual colored French Bulldog puppies. In breeding like this can bring other recessive genes to the forefront, along with color – things like allergies, congenital defects and rare, often deadly health conditions.

A Very Special Pumpkin...

Today’s post is dedicated to my human friend Dave and his cat Roger. Dave and Roger rescued each other on a windy winter day 16 years ago. Roger passed away this week-after a long happy life, in the care of a human who loved him deeply- and who I'm certain he loved back.

Roger was a regal fellow. He would wait patiently to greet Dave at the top of the stairs. 1 Roger was a regal fellow. He would wait patiently to greet Dave at the top of the stairs.

Just after Dave brought Roger home for the first time, he settled in as if he’d been there all along. Roger and Dave...

Roger- a tiny orange kitten- scared and hungry- somehow found himself stuck high in a tree on a blustery winter day many years ago. The skies were growing darker and there was not a home for miles… other than Dave’s.

For Dave, the tumultuous weather on that day seemed calm in comparison to the storm inside his head and heart. He was in the midst of a painful divorce, working long hours and managing feelings of distrust and disillusionment.

There is little explanation for how the tiny meow, of a then nameless kitten, made its way to Dave's ears that day- but it did.

From that day forward, the little feline- soon to be known as Roger- took a place in Dave's home where he remained a calming force in an otherwise busy life.

Roger was an old soul of sorts. He was calm and wise- but certainly not meek or timid. He seemed to embody the kind of balance many of us seek in life.

For the years that followed, Roger and Dave provided a touchstone to one another. Roger called on Dave in gentle ways and enrolled Dave’s nurturing at times when Dave needed connection most. One might say they were very much in 'sync.'

Fortunately Roger had a long happy life. But as so many of us know first hand, the grief of a companion animal's passing is often complicated and hard to bare. There are few, if any, relationships as unique as those we have with our animal companions.

We love these little souls with a depth that is hard to quantify or explain. As a predominantly verbal species, we humans tend to connect with others through words. In fact, many find it uncomfortable to remain silent in the company of another human. But with our non-human animal friends, we connect in more intuitive ways. We depend on our other senses and nothing needs explanation or justification. We quietly connect, co-exist, and exchange bids for affection. We still communicate and seek to understand one another, but we do most of it non-verbally.

In many ways our animal companions access a part of us that is not limited by what words seek to define. And as such- our feelings upon their passing also cannot be contained by, or expressed in, words.

We FEEL their absence in the truest sense. Literally experiencing a void by our feet or where they used to nap. We take pause when reflex has us breaking off a piece of toast to share with our now absent furry friend. We still open that shade to let the sun shine on their favorite napping spot....

And we miss the similar offerings they made to us... rubbing up against our leg when we felt alone, curling up in the nook of our elbow when we felt under the weather- poking us on the head when we were meant to wake up... and often reminding us to be present and take stock of life’s simple pleasures.

Dave reflected on many such moments in which Roger would call his attention to a slower pace, a moment in time- a patch of sun. He recalled offering himself as a bridge for Roger- Dave would lower his shoulder for Roger to step up on and transport him from one high perch to another. Sometimes this was to help Roger avoid a rambunctious foster kitty who was visiting. Other times it was simply to help Roger take in another view. They were bonded and they conversed with one another- intuitively. Their connection was a strong and enduring one.

Dave and Roger were good to each other and I have to believe that nature has a way of preserving such a deep connection in ways we may not yet understand.

Here’s hoping all of our companions who have passed away are enjoying peace from their new perch.

In kinship,
Dr. Pia Salk

Today’s gallery includes photos of the regal Roger and those of some other wise and lovable pumpkin kitties in need of adoption. They too, long for a safe place in someone’s home and heart- the kind that Roger was fortunate enough to find 16 years ago.
